Meaning is important to human beings

  • A study of hospital workers and patients in Vienna revealed that 87% of people were searching for meaning 
  • 7948 students at 48 colleges participated in a study conducted by John Hopkins University.  When asked what they considered “very important”, 78% said their first goal was to find a purpose and meaning to life.  Incidentally, making a lot of money was only a top priority to 16%.
  • A public opinion poll in France showed that 89% of the respondents admited that man needs something to live for beyond himself.

Meaning@Work is linked to performance

  • Roffee Park, a UK Research company conducted a survey in 2003 into the impact of meaning at work on engagement.  
    • 70% of employees are searching for more meaning at work
    • 80% of staff feel motivated when they undertand both where they adn their organisation are going - in other words, they have line of sight.
    • Devoting resources to increasing meaning at work has resulted in
      • 55% increased motivation
      • 42% increased loyalty
      • 32% increased pride
        20% increased productivity
      • 20% would find meaning in being able to contribute to society through their work
      • Meaning at work has greatest impact on the under 35 yo age group
      • Meaning at work comes about when personal, organisational and societal factors overlap resulting in happy productive and positive work for the individual.
      • There is a lack of meaning for a majority of employees
      • Less than 1/3 of employees feel a sense of community at work
      • However 1 in 10 feel greater community at work than they do at home
      • 17% feel no pride at all in the organisation they work for
      • 15% would not recommend their employer to anyone else looking for work
  • In a recently released study conducted by Watson Wyatt, 61.9% of employees said the main factor that would keep them engaged was “A sense of purpose and meaning in my job”.
  • 3 top selling books about Purpose and Meaning have been released in the past 2 years, one of which hit the New York Times Best Seller List and another of which has gone into its third printing since June 2007.
